To establish the number of people
who live within walking distance of public art pieces, I first need to
determine what ‘walking distance’ really is. The Transportation Research Board conducted a study regarding how far
citizens would be willing to walk to public transport stations for the Transit Capacity and Quality of Service
Manual; based on their findings this graph was created:
(TCQSM Chapter 3, Appendix A,
p. 3-93)
It can be interpreted that 500 meters
is approximately the distance at which people won’t consider walking. Based on
this I will highlight areas within 500m of a piece of public art, and use census
data (previously mentioned) to show how many people live within walking
distance of a piece.
